FIJI SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

- Members: Fiji line ministries, members of healty professions,
representatives of USP, Pacific representatives from Melanesia,
Polynesia and Micronesia.
- FSchM was founded in 1885, autonomous in 1998.
The FSchM Council, headed by the Chairperson, is the governing
body.

SOUTH PACIFIC APPLIED GEOSCIENCE COMMISSION

French Polynisia, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Is., Nauru, Tuvalu,

- It was originally called CCOP-SOPAC, a UN programme to promote
offshore mineral and petroleum prospecting.
Founded in 1972 and became autonomous in 1984. Original focus
has broadened its scope and capabilities
to include risk management, environmental vulnerability, energy,
water and sanitation, and information and communication technologies.

- In November 1964 a resolution was passed at te SPC Second Regional
Education Seminar to set up a working party to investigate, the
establishment of a regional examination board. An agreement was
signed on the 14th of November, 1980, after 16 years of meeting
and discussions.

SECRETARIAT OF THE PACIFIC COMMUNITY

- SPC is the oldest regional organisation in the Pacific, SPC
was established in 1947, as the South Pacific Commission, by the
6 governments that administered territories in the Pacific: Australia,
France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Now all 22 countries and territories are full members, along with
the 5 remaining founding powers, for the Netherlands is no longer
a member. SPC's governing council is the Conference of the Pacific
Community, which meets every two years. SPC's contact points are
with a wide variety of government departments such as health,
agriculture, women and youth and fisheries.

- The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariate began in 1972 as a trade
bureau, later the South Pacific Bureau for Economic Cooperation
(SPEC). The name changed in 1988 to the South Pacific Forum Secretariate,
until the current name was adopted in 2000.

UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC

- Established in 1968 by the Privy Council of the United Kingdom,
at the request of the Pacific Island leaders to meet the training
and development needs of the newly emerging island states of the
Pacific and to strengthern institutional capacity in the region.
The USP Council is its governing body. It meets twice annually.

SOUTH PACIFIC TOURISM ORGANISATION
[ SPTO ]
- Base: Suva, Fiji Islands.
- Members: American Samoa, Cook Is.,Fiji Is., French Polynesia
(Tahiti), Kiribati, New Caledonia, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa,
Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. SPTO has close to
80 private sector members or Tourism Industry Members (TIMS)
- In the early 1980s an informal association of national tourist
organisations in the South Pacific formed the Tourism Council
of the South Pacific (TCSP), which became a regional intergovernmental
organisation in 1989, based in Suva, Fiji Islands. In OCtober
1999, the organisation was renamed South Pacific Tourism Organisation
(SPTO).
